A romantic comedy infused with telenovela dramatics gives way to a satire of political corruption and social self-criticism in Mexico City at the turn of the millennium.

Maricarmen de Lara is Director of the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC) at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and is one of the leading directors of the “second wave” of women’s filmmaking in Mexico. She recently received recognition from UAM for her thirty-year professional career, from making documentaries as a member of the Cine Mujer Collective in Mexico City, to En el País, her first feature film, as well as shorts and educational documentaries. Ms. De Lara will speak on a range of topics, including women’s filmmaking and community-based audiovisual production.

Co-sponsored by the Departments of Comparative Literature, Film and Media Studies, and Spanish and Portuguese, Illuminations, and the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia (IMCINE).
