I, Pierre Riviere having slaughtered my mother, my sister, and my brother
. . . A Case of Parricide in the 19th Century -- Dossier (ed.M. Foucault) and two movies.

Michel Foucault supervised the collection of a dossier on this case in 1973, one that includes a 65 page "memoir" by the perpetrator himself. We will make the volume available on Reserve and also have a pdf copy of the "memoir" and of Foucault's brief introduction available shortly.

Not only is this dossier a notable instance of documentation, but it has given rise to two films: a dramatization directed by Rene Allio (1976) and a documentary directed by Nicolas Philibert, "Back to Normandy," (2008) where members of the cast of the Allio film -- all farmers of the region where the murders had taken place -- are interviewed regarding the effect that making the film had on their lives.
Clips from Philibert's film will be shown.

The presentation is part of a series of regular workshops on the topic, "Document/Documentary.” The workshops promote critical inquiry into literature, film and media studies, cultural studies, anthropology, philosophy and the arts. Faculty and graduate students from Comparative Literature and related departments are invited to propose workshops on research they are currently pursuing. Participants might present work-in-progress or lead a general discussion of questions related to suggested readings. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Annette Schlichter at aschlich@uci.edu.
