Carla Freccero is professor of Literature, Feminist Studies, and History of Consciousness and Director
of the Center for Cultural Studies at UC Santa Cruz, where she has taught since 1991. She writes on
early modern continental literature and history, feminist and queer theory, critical theory and, most
recently, animal theory. Her most recent book is *Queer/Early/Modern* (Duke, 2006). This paper is part
of a book-length project, *Animate Figures*. She will be presenting another chapter from that book,
"Carnivorous Virility, or Becoming-Dog," in a public lecture for the CTI on November 18.
