James Steintrager received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 1997. His first book, Cruel Delight: Enlightenment Culture and the Inhuman, looks at the ethical construct of inhumanity in Scottish Enlightenment philosophy, the engravings of William Hogarth, and the novels of the Marquis de Sade. This gives a fair indication of his scholarly interests and tastes—although he insists that a Sadeian and a sadist should never be confused (the former is actually a masochist). He is currently writing a study of pleasure as a social system. This work focuses on 17th- and 18th-century pornographic narratives and radical Enlightenment philosophy, as well as 20th-century banter about “sexual liberation.” His other interests include: neo-classical aesthetics, Hong Kong cinema, systems theory, domestic drama, the Sturm und Drang movement, Genroku literature, and picaresque fiction.
