A unique collection
of essays in which some of the most current theoretical and theatrical
trends in Latin America and Spain are discussed and explored in depth,
using the latest editions of the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Cádiz
as the primary practical basis for research.
The volume studies
traditional trends of modern theater including the interrelationship between
theater and politics; theater and literary intertextuality; theater and
national identity, and theater and ritual. Also highlighted are those trends
which are defining a more contemporary theater, including the utilization
of other performing arts in theater, such as dance and circus techniques;
contemporary technology and many other forms of popular culture. It also
includes essays on theatrical arts traditionally excluded from theater
histories, such as pyrotechnic theater and marionettes. Finally, the volume
questions the orientation of aesthetic preferences of some theater groups
who participate in festivals and seeks to establish connections between
cultural politics, legitimized theatricalities, and theater festivals.
The essays in
this volume not only describe and interpret theater, they also open the
door to discussion regarding the institution of theater itself, of Latin
American and Spanish theater and of critical theatrical discourses. Some
of the essays question the criteria for selection, preferences, and the
presence or absence of certain theatrical trends, all involved in the unfolding
of international theater festivals.
